Accidents
The railroad network in the United States includes over 600 railroads and more than 200,000 miles of tracks. There are also over 1.2 million freight cars and 200,000 locomotives. Railways are the backbone of the freight industry. Ninety percent of all consumer and business goods travel via rail and are then transferred to semi trucks. With the increase in rail traffic comes an increase in the frequency of rail accidents. Currently a train or rail accident occurs every 90 minutes accounting for more than 3,000 incidents per year which cause approximately 1,000 deaths and countless other injuries. Train accidents happen for many reasons including:
- Debris and obstructions at railroad crossings
- Mechanical failure
- Human error due to fatigue, alcohol and drugs, or poor training
